HOLDING UP THE SKY
Raw silk paper, cyanotype, dimensions variable, 2024
The installation Holding up the sky consists of twenty-eight raw silk paper structures that resemble kites. Every kite is printed with a unique sky image that has been processed through cyanotype to provide deep indigo tones.
"The creation myth" from indigenous mithology, which also makes references to the end of the world, served as the basis for the installation. "The creation myth" speaks of the "fall from the sky," a time when people fought mystical creatures while immersed in floodwaters.
The installation draws a parallel between two pursuits linked to freedom and aspiration: the ability of kites to soar high in the sky against the wind and the necessity of halting the current deterioration of nature.
