Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957) is an artist, thinker and activist, son of the poet Ai Qing. Ai Weiwei studied Fine Arts in New York where he developed a deep appreciation for Marcel Duchamp’s readymades—found everyday objects elevated to the category of art—and for his veiled criticism of cultural value systems. Ai frequently works with traditional Chinese techniques such as the use of bamboo that take us back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
